Annual Run Awards Scholarships To Remember Valued Resident

Friends and neighbors: Please join in for the
third Annual Tom Kitchen Memorial Scholarship 5K Run set for Sun., June 5, at 10 a.m., at the Field of Dreams in Independence.

Kitchen was a valued resident of the Hackettstown Community and was a very caring and selfless man. He served in the United States Navy, and was a member of the American Legion. He was a former Chief of the Hackettstown Fire Dept., co-founder of the Tiger Athletic Association, started the Girls’ Fast-Pitch Softball League in 1993 and coached softball and football for many years. He was a security guard at the high school and ran the Hackettstown DPW for more than 20 years before becoming the Warren County Road supervisor. Sadly, Kitchen lost his battle with cholangiocarcinoma, bile duct cancer, in Oct. 2013.

The course is now certified as a USATF course. Last year, approximately 230 participants combined with both walkers and runners. Proceeds funded two $2,500 scholarships to deserving Hackettstown High School students this past June and will be giving two more at the awards ceremony this year at Hackettstown High School.

It is the hope to honor Kitchen’s memory by presenting scholarships to deserving individuals for many years to come. Pre-registration is $25 and will be accepted through May 15; the day of the run is $30 from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
