Chester Lioness Lions Club has a banner year!

The Chester Lioness Lions Club just closed out fiscal year 2022-23 on June 30th. We exceeded all goals set at the beginning of the year and thank the community for your support and the service organizations we work with for your partnership. We could not have done it without you!

The Chester Lioness Lions Club is a volunteer service organization chartered under Lions International. Our focus is on providing hands-on service to communities in need in Chester and its surrounding areas.  A particular focus has been on supporting women’s and family needs. The club currently has a membership of 31 and is looking to add more members – community residents who are interested in volunteering their time.

Here are a few metrics on the impact the club has made on the community in the past year….

  • Volunteer Activities Completed: 46
  • Volunteer Hours: 922
  • People Served: 3,472
  • Funds Donated: $7,114

Two of the signature programs for the club are the work we do with Homeless Solutions Inc. (HSI) and Jersey Battered Women’s Service (JBWS). Activities with HSI include cooking and serving dinner monthly to residents of the shelter and organizing and hosting a birthday party for children living at the shelter. For JBWS, we provide exit baskets for families transitioning out of the JBWS shelter, filled with household items that help them as they set up house independently. We also help, monthly, to prepare for Distribution Day, which is a “store” where shelter residents can “shop” for needed personal items.

A direct local focus of the club has been on Community Hope in Chester, a non-profit organization that provides housing and essential services to developmentally disabled individuals.  We home-cook picnic lunches for residents over summer – for Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day and buy birthday and Christmas gifts for them. Similarly, we purchase Christmas gifts for residents of Chester Area Senior Housing (CASH).

One of our most important programs is offering scholarships to graduating High School students residing in Chester, Mendham or Washington Township. Each scholarship offers $1,500 towards college costs. Criteria for selection of candidates for these scholarships include academic record, community service and outstanding accomplishments in activities that demonstrate leadership. Financial need is also a key consideration. This year we awarded two scholarships – one each to a graduate of West Morris Central and West Morris Mendham.

A very proud moment for our club was receiving the Bob Moore Pioneer Award for our work from the District Governor of Lions District 16N in April.

As our membership increased throughout the year, our activities increased as well. We added support for P. G. Chambers School by re-organizing their library and for Family Promise of Morris County by donating home-assembled Easter baskets for shelter children. We just added Matheny Medical and Educational Center to our list and volunteer twice a month at their thrift store.

We have plans to further expand the organizations we work with and the number of activities we perform in the next fiscal year, which just started on July 1.

The above are a sampling of the work we do throughout the year. For further information on the club, our activities, and how to become a member:
