If you’re in need of dental implants, crowns, bridges, or veneers, you’re probably in luck that you don’t need a traditional dental impression! The standard methods of sticking a tray of goopy impression material in your mouth are starting to wane.
Dental implants, crowns, bridges, and veneers require accurate methods of transmitting 3-dimensional information to laboratories, where these implants, crowns, bridges, and veneers are fabricated. Whether these impressions are taken with traditional materials or newer digital methods, both provide a high degree of accuracy.
“Gagging is typically a patient’s high concern,” reports Dr. Ira Goldberg of Morris County Dental Associates. “Digital impressions eliminate this issue, because it’s a material-free method. We use a handle that emits visible light to transfer the necessary information to the computer. It makes patient visits more comfortable and efficient.”
“Some studies show that digital impressions are actually more accurate than traditional impressions. Crowns, implants, veneers, and bridges actually can fit better. Full arch dental implants such as All-On-Four® and hybrid dentures are not quite there yet, and traditional impressions are oftentimes necessary,” Dr. Goldberg explains.
Digital impressions also allow for smoother workflows regarding dental implants. “Much of these ‘behind-the-scenes’ processes patients will never see, but they provide the patient with greater chances of success regarding the comfort and longevity of their implants. For example, surgical guides allow us to place dental implants with a greater degree of precision, as well as make appointments shorter.”
Color matching is another benefit of digital impressions. “The system we use in our office provides this function, and its amazing how accurate it can be,” continues Dr. Goldberg.
So, if you’re in the need for dental implants, veneers, crowns, or bridges, the days of goop and gagging may be gone! Check with your dentist to see if they can offer you this technology.
