Visitors are invited to step onto the battlefields of the American Civil War at Civil War Weekend at Historic Speedwell in Morristown on Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participants will join the Second New Jersey Brigade for this unique, two-day event, as they reenact the daily lives of soldiers through musket, artillery and bayonet drills, cannon firings and exciting skirmishes. Speak to the soldiers about cooking, dress, and general setup of the camp, and cover your ears as the massive period cannon fires.
Visitors will learn about the basics of battlefield medicine for soldiers who suffered injuries or diseases, and visit the medical area where the ‘wounded’ are cared for.
Tours of the National Historic Landmark Factory Building will be available, as will interactive, hands-on telegraph exhibit, and the Vail House that was built more than 150 years ago. Explore the exhibits on the Speedwell Ironworks, a granary full of early farm implements, and watch the enormous 24-foot overshot waterwheel turn in the Wheelhouse.
Admission to this event is $7 per adult, $6 per senior, $5 per child aged 4 to 16, and it is free for those 4 and under. For more information and directions to Historic Speedwell, visit morrisparks.net or call 973-285-6550.
