Each year Netcong Elementary School is asked by the American Legion Post 278 in Stanhope to participate in its annual coloring contest. Student works of art are judged at the local level and can move on to the county, and then state levels if selected.
This year Netcong School Art teacher, Britt Huss, worked with the fourth and fifth grade students to produce artwork to compete in the coloring contest. The American Legion of New Jersey selected Captain Emilio Carranza Memorial as the selected art piece for this year. The students learned about the Captain Emilio Carranza Memorial which is located in the pine barrens of southern NJ. With Huss’ strong background in Arts Infusion learning, she was able to infuse art into social studies lessons. Over the course of two meeting periods, the students learned of Carranza, a noted Mexican aviator and National hero for his goodwill trips between Mexico City and Washington, D.C. The picture the students colored was a monument built to honor Carranza. The monument stands in the place where Carranza’s plane crashed tragically in 1928 on his way back to Mexico City from New York.
