During the third summer session, students in Mrs. Mancuso’s former second grade class in Hopatcong Borough Schools have been communicating using Edmodo and working on reviewing second grade skills utilizing the on-line program titled IXL. Students investigated tree cookies, determined the ages of each tree by counting growth rings, and discussed various weather patterns that could affect the growth of a tree. The students then listened to the trade book titled “What Do You Do with an Idea?” Each student wrote about their own ideas and detailed the necessary steps in writing to carry out his/her plan. Last, students were introduced to coding using the latest software released by Osmo. Students worked with a partner to combine both physical and digital objects to create commands for a character named Awbie. Students presented their inventions and shared their knowledge of coding with their families at the conclusion of the session.
