The Mendham Borough Historical Society plans to meet on Tues., Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m., in the Garabrant Center, in Mendham Borough. The program at 7:45 p.m. features Dr. Patrick J. Owens presenting, ”The Lake Denmark Explosion.”
On July 10, 1926, 2.5 million pounds of TNT exploded at the Lake Denmark Naval Ammunitions Depot in northern Morris County. The blast not only caused extreme damage at the Depot and at adjoining Picatinny Arsenal but also caused destroyed property, deposited associated material throughout neighboring areas, and led to discussions regarding closure of both installations. This narrative and visual presentation brings to life a part of our local history not well known or remembered.
Owens, a graduate of Notre Dame U, has been a U.S. Army Historian at Picatinny Arsenal since 1988. He has been guest speaker at numerous organizations and societies; published in “Encyclopedia of New Jersey History,” “The Heritage Review,” “Social Science Docket,” among others. The public is invited; parking and program are free.
