Within the heart, mind and soul of each and every one of us is the Divine Calling to serve God through selfless service to others. Volunteer work can be a most fulfilling and rewarding thing. It is uncanny that the more you give to help others, the tide of goodness and kindness befalls back to you. It is practically a scientific fact.

For the past two months, I have been doing volunteer work at my local library, specifically the Foxwood Farms Library. It is a small library, but jam packed with books from many different genres and subjects.

From the writings of Dickens, Shakespeare, Hemingway, Rawlings and Wolfe to the home repair books that show you how to fix a leaky toilet, this little library has a wide range of authors and titles.

In the course of two months, I have had the golden opportunity to talk with people to whom I would rarely ever get the chance to talk with. From retired high ranking military officers to leaders in industry to a 15 year old boy, who is fiercely focused on becoming a rocket scientist, I cherish my conversations with all the folks I have met, in my work as a Volunteer Librarian.

I have all so many people tell me that I should get a job that would bring in a weekly paycheck. Relatives, neighbors, fellow church members and friends tell me that I am wasting my time working for free. I let it go in one ear and out the other. For there is a spiritual law that is as real as this newspaper you are reading.

And that spiritual law is simply this: so as you give, so shall you receive.

What I’ve gained in doing volunteer work at the library cannot be measured by dollars and cents.. But I’ve gained all so much more than a weekly paycheck could ever cover. When there are lulls in people coming into the library, when all is quiet and still, I can pick up “Look Homeward, Angel” and quietly read it, in the midst of shelves and shelves of books. Some thick as a brick and some as thin as 50 pages
long.
