Death Is Not To Be Feared

By Richard Mabey Jr.

Death is nothing to fear. It is really like walking from your kitchen into your living room. That’s all there really is to it. God’s immense love will transcend your eternal soul into Heaven, when the angels call you Home to be with the Lord. There is nothing to fear about death.

In the past two and half years, I have been examined by six Cardiologists and three Primary Care Physicians. In my fight against this horrible heart disease, that they call Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, my doctors have been amazed at how serious I am in my fight against this heart disease caused by a genetic mutation. But greater than that, my doctors are amazed at how well I have accepted my fate.

Each of us need to find our own truth, our own spiritual path, our own way of answering the question as to what lies beyond this physical existence. For me, I have a deep belief that the universe was created by an all-knowing, all-loving supreme being, which is commonly referred to as God. As a corollary, to this basic belief, I believe that Jesus of Nazareth was and is the Son of God.

My purpose in writing this article, is not to pound my fist upon the podium and shout out that you must believe as I do. Rather, I write these words to provide comfort, solace and assurance to those of us facing an incurable, fatal disease that death is not to be feared. Not for one single second. Death is simply a transcending of our eternal soul from the physical plane to the heavenly plane. That is all it is. Simply put,
death is not to be feared.

For the past three months, practically every single night, I have dreamt that I am sitting upon the foundation of the old Mabey Ice House, along the path of the old Morris Canal in Lincoln Park, with my late grandfather, Watson Mabey. As a child, Grandpa and I would often walk down Mabey Lane, then walk the forest path to the old Mabey Ice House. There we would sit and look out to the still, murky waters of the old Morris Canal. Grandpa would put his hand upon my shoulder and tell me stories of his boyhood, growing up along the canal.

In my dreams, Grandpa and I sit upon the stone remains of the old Mabey Ice House. Grandpa assures me  that God has a place for me in Heaven. And, Grandpa tells me that he will be there to guide me across the way to the golden light to Heaven’s Gate. But most of all, Grandpa tells me that I need not fear death.

That Heaven is a most wonderful place, with a beauty and grandeur beyond my human understanding.

When I was a boy, Grandma and Grandpa lived with us in the old Mabey Homestead. My grandparents bedroom was right in back of mine. I loved them both, with all my heart. I believe, with all of the fiber and sinew of my heart, that my dear and beloved grandfather is one of my precious guardian angels.

I take a regiment of vitamins and minerals and herbs. I eat fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. I walk every day. I go to an exercise class, three times a week. I drink only spring water. I pray at least five times a day, for God to heal my heart. I read portions of my Bible, three or four times a day. Still, I can feel that I am failing. I have accepted my fate.

As long as I am able to draw breath into my lungs. As long as this old heart continues to rhythmically beat, I will do my utmost best to bring this simple truth to others. That truth is simply this, God loves you more than you will ever know. Death is not to be feared.
