EAST HANOVER, NJ — The quiet stacks of the East Hanover Public Library (EHPL) transformed into a whimsical playground for some very special overnight guests. From August 3rd through August 7th, the library hosted its highly anticipated annual Stuffed Animal Sleepover.

The creative community literacy event is designed to foster an early love for reading at the library.

Children ages three and older were invited to drop-off their favorite plush companions at the 415 Ridgedale Avenue facility early in the week, allowing plenty of time to bid a temporary farewell to their stuffed friends. On the night of Thursday, August 6th, after the building closed to the public and the human guests returned home, the real magic began.

Library staff curated an imaginative overnight experience for the animals to help bridge the gap between home and the library. They photographed the plush toys engaged in various library adventures — browsing through colorful picture book bins, pretending to operate the electronic checkout scanners, climbing up the book drop carts, and gathering in cozy circles for late-night story hours.

“The program is one of my favorites,” said Youth Services Librarian Pam Zacher. “I will walk around for weeks before the event and think of good photo opportunities. I also ask my daughter for her input for some good poses.”

The core mission of the Stuffed Animal Sleepover extends far beyond a simple photo opportunity. Early childhood literacy experts emphasize that these events break down psychological barriers, transforming public libraries from rigid, quiet spaces into magical, welcoming environments. Seeing their beloved toys interacting with books creates a powerful emotional bridge for a child, ultimately boosting reading habits at home.

“This program is especially important because it helps kids understand that literacy is more than learning phonics or required reading for school,” the Youth Services Librarian said. “Our stuffed animal sleepover includes an interactive story time which becomes a bonding experience between a caregiver and child, librarian and patrons, community and library.”

An open enrollment policy for kids from surrounding towns like Florham Park and Whippany drove a robust turnout this summer, allowing the library to successfully establish a regional footprint for its summer reading initiatives heading into the upcoming school year. 

The event concluded on Friday, August 7th with families returning to the library to reunite with their plush friends.

Parents flooded the EHPL Facebook page with expressions of joy and laughter, with one commenting: “My kids are gonna freak when they see this!”

Each child received a personalized photo packet of their animal’s overnight escapades, a special participation goodie bag, and a curated list of book recommendations tailored to their age group to encourage immediate checkout.

A lifelong passion for learning always begins with a little bit of imagination.

“Leaving a stuffed friend behind in a strange place takes a lot of courage and trust; it’s a wonderful way to help children learn the library is a welcoming and safe space,” Zacher said. “ And when children feel safe and welcome they are more open to learning and exploring.”
