Fun Events At Schiff Nature Preserve As Summer’s End Nears

There are lots of fun events happening at Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham as summer nears its end.

August 12, 2017 (Saturday) 8:30 – 10:00 pm
Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing Party
Hike up to the great meadow for a perfect view of this year’s Perseid meteor shower! The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most anticipated celestial events in the Northern Hemisphere. The shooting stars will be easy to view without a telescope, peaking the night of the 12th! Bring a picnic blanket and a snack and enjoy this special night at Schiff with friends and family. Member fee is $5. Non member fee is $10.

August 17, 2017 (Thursday) 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Foraging for Wild Edibles
Join Schiff in exploring the summer landscape for wild foods including berries, wild spices, and tea herbs. This gentle-paced hike will traverse the preserve’s trails as we learn about safe and ethical foraging, cook methods, and storage of wild foods. Rachel Mackow owns Wild Ridge Plants, a native plant nursery and stewardship consulting service, located in Pohatcong. She completed an apprenticeship in herbal medicine with Pat Chichon in Lambertville. She and her family use wild foods and homemade plant-based remedies extensively. Member fee is $20 and non-member fee is $25.

Yoga Hike
Join Schiff Nature Preserve for an easy hike and gentle yoga session, suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Begin with a meditation and centering session indoors, then enjoy a beautiful hike through the landscapes of Schiff Nature Preserve, enjoying the detoxifying quality of being present in nature. Yogis should bring their own mat (or a blanket/towel if you don’t have one). Member free is $15. Non member fee is $20.

Thursday Evening Mystery Hike
Join a Schiff n aturalist for a guided hike covering a different MYSTERIOUS topic each week. Hikes will be moderately paced and suitable for families and adults! FREE to Schiff members. Non- members pay $5. Drop ins are welcome.

August 26, 2017 (Saturday) 7 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.
Gong Meditation Journey
Join us at Schiff Nature Preserve for an amazing journey inward. When fully engaged in listening to the Gong,  be encapsulated within the sound field, merging with the sound as it travels through the body. The sound experience produces the effect of journeys. As the frequencies of the gong travel throughout your body, you are enabled to relax and enter a deep meditative state during some experience a journey outward, and a profound expansion of mind state. Members fee is $15. Non-members fee is $20.

August 27, 2017 (Sunday) 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Eating with the Seasons
Join Off the Grid at Schiff Nature Preserve to explore ways to cook for a compassionate planet, healthy body, and peaceful mind. This workshop will focus on the fresh fruits and vegetables of high summer. Guests will go home with a good sense of how to procure local produce, prepare and enjoy cooking with the seasons. Off the Grid’s mission is to combine yoga and the outdoors as a way to uniquely enlighten yoga practitioners of all levels. Member fee is $25. Non-member fee is $30.

August 28, 2017 (Monday) 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Explore Schiff
After a long summer, but right before school starts, kids age 6 to 12 can enjoy a few hours of exploration fun and travel the forest and field of Schiff to uncover signs of wildlife. Children should wear closed toed shoes and bring a snack and water. Member fee is $15  Non-member fee is $20.

August 29, 2017 (Tuesday) 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Introduction to Tracking & Signs
Join us in the field following both animal and human tracks. Track patterns will be discussed as well as signs of passing wildlife. This course will introduce students to the fascinating art of discovering and following tracks and signs. Member fee is $20. Non-member fee is $25.
