Gan Ivrit Immersion School at Temple Beth Shalom to open September 2020

Temple Beth Shalom, Livingston, will begin its Gan Ivrit Immersion School in September 2020. This first-of-its-kind program in the Greater MetroWest area will provide an all-Hebrew language and culture immersion school for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds.

An open house for prospective families to learn more about Gan Ivrit is scheduled for Thursday, March 12. The evening will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Gan Ivrit will offer a developmentally appropriate curriculum taught solely in Hebrew, by teachers who are native Hebrew speakers from Israel. The program will be based in its own special wing at Temple Beth Shalom which is being transformed into a beautiful environment reminiscent of Israel.

“Starting Gan Ivrit at Temple Beth Shalom was a clear choice for us! Knowing that children learn languages best at a very young age and that Temple Beth Shalom is a prominent Jewish place of worship in Livingston which places importance on our connections to Israel and the Jewish people, a Hebrew Immersion approach makes total sense,” said Randi Cohen, TBS Preschool Director. “We are so excited to offer Gan Ivrit Immersion School alongside our popular Philip J. Solondz Preschool, sharing many of the same resources, program offerings, and facilities.”

The program will focus on second language (Hebrew) acquisition. Current research shows that second language acquisition for young children has the following benefits:

  • Stimulates a child’s curiosity, making children more receptive to learning in other areas.
  • Boosts cognitive development which helps overall academic progress.
  • Increases empathy toward others and receptiveness to different cultures and experiences, both essential for teamwork, school success and overall life satisfaction.
  • Presents learning challenges that help children stretch and grow.

“Gan Ivrit will be taught by experienced, nurturing instructors who are native Hebrew speakers in order to create an authentic, immersive learning environment,” said Leah Beker, TBS Director of Education. “The age-appropriate curriculum will be fun and active and will incorporate technology, music, and art to capture learning through all senses.”

A variety of program options are available for 2-, 3-, and 4-year-olds to maximize their learning and social growth and to best meet the needs of active families.
