Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) will hold its sixth-annual Great Swamp Scavenger Hunt on May 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event will begin and end at the pavilion outside the Helen C. Fenske Visitor Center at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Harding Township, N.J. The event is suitable for all ages and skill levels. Teams and families with children are strongly encouraged to participate.
GSWA’s pirate-themed “treasure” hunt charts a voyage of discovery through New Jersey’s Great Swamp and Passaic River region. Stops (or ports o’ call) will include important natural, historical, and cultural treasures located in Morris and Somerset County.
Players will follow a set of clues and solve short puzzles at each site to find and collect game tokens. Tokens can be used to win special prizes at the Pirate King’s Tricky Tray during a barbecue later in the afternoon.
Participants may begin checking in at the Fenske Center at 10 a.m. Official Great Swamp Scavenger Hunt Clue Kits will be distributed at the check-in table along with a basic map showing all ports o’ call. There is no predetermined route for game play, and participants are responsible for navigating their own way to each destination. Cars or bicycles will be needed in order to travel.
All players should return to the Fenske Center with their tokens by 3 p.m. to participate in the Tricky Tray and enjoy a barbecue courtesy of GSWA and NNJC. Typical barbecue fare—hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks—will be provided, but guests are invited to bring side-dishes to share. Guests are invited to bring their own lawn chairs or picnic blankets.
The proceeds from this event support GSWA and its many other environmental stewardship, education, and advocacy programs. Tickets are: $10/adult, $5/child (6 to 17), $0/child 5 or under.
Advance registration is strongly suggested. Register and donate online atGreatSwamp.org, or call (973) 538-3500. Onsite registrations and donations will be accepted.
