On Sunday, May 23rd Livingston Justice partnered with Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors (LNHN) to host a sandwich drive in celebration of the Muslim holiday of Eid, which resulted in 315 sandwiches and brown bag meals being donated to local food pantries.

Eid al-Fitr is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world to mark the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan, which is done as an exercise in remembrance and empathy for those less fortunate.  In this spirit of charity, Livingston Justice partner with LNHN to help feed our neighbors.

According to Naureen Akhter, who came to Livingston Justice with the idea for the event and hosted it, “Charity and compassion are core values for Muslims as we observe Ramadan and Eid. That’s why I am grateful to the organizers at Livingston Justice and our partners at Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors who helped make this service project in celebration of Eid a reality.”

In addition to providing the community with an opportunity to celebrate Eid, the event also served a very pressing need.  “315 bagged lunches means that 315 people were able to have good nutrition, a filling meal and comfort in knowing that they are cared about.  The meals went to the homeless and they often don’t know where their next meal will come from or what it will be,” said Stacey Rubinstein, President of LNHN.

Nick Santinelli, a LNHN volunteer who delivered the donations, said it was clear that each one was made with love and care and this was truly a beautiful way to celebrate a holiday.
