Local Author To Read From New Book About Overbrook Asylum

Author Wheeler Antabanez continues his local book tour with a reading at the Cedar Grove Public Library on Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

He will show a video featuring the Essex County Hospital Center and read a short story from “The Old Asylum” titled “Sanatorium Days Overbrook Nights.”  After the reading, Wheeler will take questions from the audience and discuss his adventures on the Hilltop.  Copies of “The Old Asylum And Other Stories” will be on sale for $20 and will be available for signing.

Having spent a significant portion of his youth playing in the forsaken hospitals atop Second Mountain, Wheeler’s explorations of the abandoned institutions directly influenced the tales in his new book published Sagging Meniscus Press of Montclair.

The stories are fiction, set against the backdrop of The Old Asylum, Wheeler’s imagined combination of the Overbrook Mental Hospital and the abandoned Tuberculosis Sanatorium that once stood on the Hilltop property in Essex County.

Wheeler’s presentation will touch upon the history of both hospitals and their subsequent demolition.  The event is free, open to the public, and will begin at 6:30 p.m.
