Q & A with ShopRite of Wayne’s Executive Chef John A. Ramirez

The holidays are here, and we all know what that means: time to head to the store and start shopping.

The holidays are a time for seeing family and friends. They are also a time for cooking and eating.

People experiment with new recipes they haven’t tried before. Others want food that’s already made and ready to serve.

Wayne Life interviewed Executive Chef John A. Ramirez about what the holidays mean to him and how he will share his passion for cooking and serving others with ShopRite of Wayne and its customers.

What does cooking at ShopRite of Wayne mean to you?
My love for cooking started at an early age. My grandmother, my father, my mother they all brought such joy by preparing family meals and cooking for special occasions. Being the executive chef at Inserra Supermarkets and preparing menus and meals lets me bring that same sort of joy to our customers and their families. I enjoy selecting fresh ingredients from our produce, seafood and meat departments and working with our team to ensure that we have everything that our customers need for breakfast, lunch, dinner and large gatherings. And working for a family-owned business is quite special because the Inserra Family supports and cares for all of us like we are family.

What are some of the most popular grab-n-go meals people buy and what makes them so popular?

When it comes to proteins the herb marinated flank steak tops the list followed by cold fried chicken and grilled chicken. Rounding out the top 5 are roasted Brussel sprouts and grilled asparagus.

Is Shop Rite of Wayne preparing any special meals for the holidays? What makes preparing these meals special?

We have an extensive catering menu for the holidays and also work with customers on custom menu items. We have complete Thanksgiving Dinners including a Friendsgiving Feast Bundle. We will have an array of side dishes ready to grab and go or special order for Thanksgiving and Christmas including several of my own special recipes like cheddar-scallion au gratin potatoes. We will have fresh turkey gravy, mashed sweet potatoes, roasted sweet potatoes, roasted fingerling potatoes, and a list of family favorites such as macaroni and cheese, wild rice pilaf, corn bread and sausage stuffing, green beans almondine, roasted brussels sprouts, grilled asparagus, roasted butternut squash, roasted root vegetables, specialty cheese platters, charcuterie platters, shrimp platters, salads, fresh baked pies, cornbread, and fresh cranberry sauce.

We really can make virtually anything and everything our customers would like for the holidays. They can stop in, call or order online too.

Cooking for the holidays and preparing meals, menus, and dishes for our customers to celebrate the holidays is really what makes me and our team of chefs’ smile. We know that we are helping other families get together and share memories of food, fun and love! And if we are helping with the cooking, they have more time to spend with the people they love!
