Franklin Elementary School is trying something new and is looking for community involvement and support for its “Stuff A Bus” event for Roxbury Social Services. The community is asked to bring unwrapped toys and games for children of all ages to the Franklin School parking lot at 8 MeekerStreet in Succasunna from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Dec. 3 and 4.
The “Stuff A Bus” idea originated from Gail LaCosta, a counselor at the school. “When wrapping up our annual drive for Roxbury Social Services, another teacher and I were talking about what an amazing job our small elementary school did, just collecting over 3 days, in school only. This got us talking about the potential for the increase in collection if we opened the drive up to weekends and to all community members.”
With the holidays quickly approaching, this generated the idea for a “Stuff A Bus” event to help collect toys and games for the students and families of Roxbury Township. “Traditionally, many kids focus a lot about what they will receive for the holidays, as a school counselor, I think we can use this event as an opportunity to teach our students about the importance and benefits of giving rather than receiving,” explained LaCosta.
The holidays can be an expensive and stressful time for any family, but every kid deserves to have something to look forward too during the holidays and this drive can help put a smile on their face and help our families stress a little less this busy holiday season.
“I hope that this project benefits our community by helping our students learn a valuable life lesson, as well as, by helping the students and families in our community come together to help others have the amazing holiday that they deserve.”
