William Paterson University has built a reputation in New Jersey and beyond for its welcoming, inclusive campus and strong sense of community.

The university hopes to build on this reputation with the naming of its new Vice President for Student Development, Dr. Mel Johnson-Norwood. He brings two decades of educational experience and will be taking over the reins after having successful stints at several other established schools.

 He most recently served as vice chancellor for student affairs and associate provost at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, where he managed student services. During his tenure, the university renovated the residence halls, and secured more than $2 million dollars in federal and state funding to support student success and wellness.

He also brings a wealth of knowledge, having earned a bachelor of science degree in business education and a master’s degree in educational administration from Alabama State University. Further, he also holds a master of science degree in rehabilitation counseling from Winston-Salem State University, as well as a doctor of education degree in higher education administration from Auburn University.

He said the opportunity to work directly with William Paterson’s students was one of the position’s greatest attractions.

“I am most excited about the students,” Johnson-Norwood said in an email. “During my interview process, I quickly learned how passionate students are about William Paterson University and how deeply connected they feel to this institution. It is a special place. I was also impressed by the dedication of the staff in the Division of Student Development and their commitment to supporting student success.”

Johnson-Norwood hopes to begin making a positive impact immediately. In his new role, he will oversee areas that include campus and residence life and career development.

“My goal has always been to help students define and create their own success,” Johnson-Norwood said.”I look forward to getting to know both new and returning students and becoming an active member of both our campus community and also its surrounding communities, including Wayne, Haledon and North Haledon. Students can expect an engaged, thoughtful, and approachable vice president who prioritizes their safety, well-being, and success in every decision.”

The newly appointed administrator is hoping to have open communication between his office and the students, staff, and faculty. He seeks to continue the inclusive atmosphere the university has worked diligently to develop through the years, especially under his predecessor, Dr. Miki Cammarata, who is retiring after 12 years in the position.

Johnson-Norwood is confident that his ability to connect with others will help William Paterson University meet any ongoing or future challenges.

“William Paterson has ambitious goals related to student success and what it means to be successful today – academically, personally, and professionally,” Johnson-Norwood said. “Before implementing significant changes, I want to take the time to understand the experiences, needs, and aspirations of our students and the campus community. My approach is to listen first, learn what is working well, identify opportunities for improvement, and build on existing strengths. Any changes we pursue will be developed in partnership with students, faculty, and staff, with student success remaining at the center of our efforts.”

Johnson-Norwood and his team will look to further students’ success as they prepare for a new semester. Like students and alumni, he has felt immense pride in being part of this inclusive and diverse campus. He has spoken with many undergraduates and alumni who have shared positive stories about their experiences on campus.

“That sense of connection and pride is something special,” he said. I have also learned very quickly that it is difficult to say no to William Paterson University once you have visited the campus and experienced the community firsthand. I look forward to helping more prospective students discover what makes this University unique, opening doors for them to experience the campus for themselves, and ultimately helping them find a place they can proudly call home.”
